Toshima is a ward with a culture of its own, centred on Ikebukuro. It is a pilgrimage site for anime, manga, and game fans from around the world, with character monuments and specialist shops scattered through the streets. Around Ikebukuro Station, large malls and an enormous range of restaurants make it easy to fill a whole day, while nearby shopping streets keep a retro Showa-era feel — that mix of old and new is the ward's charm.
