About Bunkyo

Bunkyo is a calm, scholarly ward, home to the University of Tokyo and many cultural institutions. Green Hongo and the Nezu–Yanaka neighbourhoods still hold streetscapes that go back to the Edo period, and simply walking them gives you a feel for Japanese history. The Yanaka Ginza shopping street serves local food and souvenirs in a wonderfully old-fashioned setting and is a firm favourite with overseas visitors. Beautiful gardens designated as national historic sites, including Koishikawa Korakuen and Rikugien, are within walking distance and lovely in every season. Ueno is about 5 minutes away by train, putting the Tokyo National Museum and Ueno Zoo close at hand. Akihabara is about 10 minutes and Shinjuku about 20; Haneda Airport is roughly 50 minutes and Narita about 70.
