Kita Ward, centred on Umeda — the largest downtown district in western Japan — is where you feel Osaka right now. The Floating Garden Observatory at the Umeda Sky Building gives you the whole city by day or night. A short walk away, the Tenjinbashisuji shopping street runs about 2.6km, the longest in Japan, with some 600 shops making it a paradise for eating your way along while soaking up old-town bustle. In Nakanoshima you can combine art and greenery at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art and Nakanoshima Park, while Osaka Tenmangu Shrine offers centuries of festival tradition. Kyoto is about 28 minutes away by train and Kobe about 20. Itami Airport is roughly 30 minutes and Kansai International about 50. Kita is the efficient choice for touring Kansai.
