Okinawa is one of Japan's great island destinations, where emerald seas meet the living history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Shuri Castle, a World Heritage site, still conveys the splendour of the kingdom through its vermilion Shureimon gate and stately main hall. At the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, home to around 70 species of coral and to whale sharks, the scale of the main tank is like standing inside the sea. Kokusai-dori runs about 1.6km through central Naha, packed with Okinawan food and souvenir shops, and it is only a short walk from your accommodation. Spend the day on the water and the evening listening to sanshin music at a live house. From Naha Airport, taxis and cars reach the city's main sights quickly, and the flight from Haneda takes about 2 hours 40 minutes.
