Sightseeing on foot

Nine places you can reach from your apartment without a day trip

Minato holds Tokyo's tower, its oldest Tokugawa temple, a shrine hidden among skyscrapers and the bay itself. With a week, you take them one morning at a time.

  1. Landmark

    Tokyo Tower

The orange 333 m tower from 1958. The main deck at 150 m faces the bay; go after dark when the lights change by season.

    Akabanebashi Sta. (Oedo Line)

  2. Temple

    Zojoji Temple

Founded in 1393 and the family temple of the Tokugawa shoguns. The red Sangedatsumon gate survived the war; six shoguns rest in the mausoleum behind.

    Onarimon / Daimon Sta.

  3. Shrine

    Hie Shrine, Akasaka

A hilltop shrine between office towers, reached through a tunnel of red torii on the Sanno stairs. Quiet at 8 am, and the guardian statues are monkeys, not lions.

    Akasaka / Tameike-sanno Sta.

  4. Seasonal

    Meiji Jingu Gaien ginkgo avenue

Four rows of ginkgo turn gold from mid-November to early December. Walk it before breakfast to beat the crowds.

    Gaienmae / Aoyama-itchome Sta.

  5. Art and garden

    Nezu Museum

Japanese and East Asian art in a Kengo Kuma building, with a hillside garden of stone lanterns and tea houses behind it. Closed Mondays.

    Omotesando Sta.

  6. Edo garden

    Hamarikyu Gardens

A shogun's duck-hunting garden on the bay, with a seawater pond and a tea house that serves matcha. Water buses leave from the pier for Asakusa.

Shiodome Sta., next door to Minato

  7. The bay

    Rainbow Bridge and Odaiba

Cross the bridge on foot along its free promenade, or ride the driverless Yurikamome over it to Odaiba's beach and waterfront.

    Shibaura-futo Sta. (Yurikamome)

  8. Art triangle

    Roppongi art triangle

Mori Art Museum and its 52nd-floor city view, the National Art Center and the Suntory Museum of Art, all within a ten-minute walk of each other.

    Roppongi Sta.

  9. New Tokyo

    Azabudai Hills and teamLab Borderless

Japan's tallest building, a market hall of Tokyo food makers, and the digital art museum teamLab Borderless.

    Kamiyacho Sta.

Opening hours and seasonal dates change; check each place before you go.

Japanese experiences, a short ride away

Things worth a week, not an afternoon

  • Tea ceremony in a 300-year-old garden

Happo-en in Shirokanedai offers tea ceremony sessions in its tea house beside a pond of koi and bonsai that are centuries old. Reserve a day ahead.

    Shirokanedai Sta.

  • Kabuki at Kabukiza, one act at a time

Ginza's Kabukiza sells single-act tickets on the day, with English audio guides, so an evening can be 60 minutes rather than four hours.

    Higashi-ginza Sta.

  • Breakfast at Tsukiji Outer Market, dinner from it

Tamagoyaki on a stick and a sushi counter before 9 am, then fish, knives and dried seaweed to carry back to your own kitchen.

Tsukiji Sta., next to Hamarikyu Gardens

  • Old-town evening in Azabu-Juban

A shopping street of family shops under the Roppongi towers: taiyaki at Naniwaya Sohonten, open since 1909, soba counters and a summer festival.

    Azabu-juban Sta.

  • Two night views, one week

Tokyo Tower's main deck looks out over the bay; Tokyo City View on Roppongi Hills' 52nd floor looks back at the tower. One on arrival night, the other on your last.

    Akabanebashi / Roppongi Sta.

  • A day in Kamakura, back for dinner

The Great Buddha, Hase-dera and the Enoden tram along the coast are about an hour from Shinagawa on the JR Yokosuka Line.

    From Shinagawa Sta.
